Lion Family

On television, we often see lions living in groups - big groups with over twenty members, medium-sized groups with around ten members, and small groups with four or five members. A big group consists of three or four families combined, a medium-sized group has two families, and a small group has only one family.
Having more lions together makes it easier to catch large animals, such as giraffes, which require multiple lions working together to capture. Too few lions cannot catch large animals, not even oxen, which are massive in size; a single lion is ineffective.
Lion families have a tradition: when the young lions, two males and two females, reach maturity, the males must leave the family. This is to prevent breeding between siblings. This tradition ensures the purity of the lion's family bloodline.
Female lions can stay with the family to help with hunting. This is why we often witness hunting conducted by family lions.
