Rome Arena

Today, when we visit Rome, we can see the ruined and deserted remains of the ancient Colosseum. During the Middle Ages, this was a venue where fifty thousand spectators witnessed brutal battles between humans and animals. Rome, under the rule of kings, organized these cruel spectacles to gain public support. The events took place for one hundred days each year and featured intense fights between lions, tigers, and elephants, both cruel and exhilarating. Approximately nine thousand animals were imported from Africa for these shows, incurring significant transportation costs. The journey presented numerous challenges, including crossing oceans and large rivers. Upon arrival, all the animals were extremely emaciated and unfit for combat, requiring several months of rest to regain their strength.
