Abalone is so expensive, a biggest one costing few thousand US dollars each. It is not because of the value of nutrition, it is the rareness of its supply.
Abalone unlike other fishes you can catch by net in the surface of the sea. It lies deeply down inside the rock of sea bottom. Fishermen have to dive down to catch it. Great risks involve into catch it. It is because many sharks swim in the nearly rocks of the sea. Sharks are a great threat to the fishermen.
Not all the sharks will attack the fishermen, but some will. Therefore, in every year several fishermen will die under the attack of sharks. But for the high profit before them they will risk their life to dive to the sea bottom to catch the abalone.
At the Southern part of Australia, many abalone live at the sea bottom. Due to the high demand in Asia which will pay very high price for the supply. In usually case, when the fishermen catch abalone in the morning, it will be aired in few hours. The Asia rich people can enjoy fresh abalone in the party in the night.
