Stars And Mud

Last century in America, there was a military officer, who was assigned to station at a village in a desert area. His wife accompanied him to go together. But, not long after, he was again transferred to another place, leaving his wife alone in the village.
In this village, all the residents were Indians and Mexicans. They spoke their own language and had their own culture. This American lady was so lonely and unhappy, living herself in a very helpless way.
She wrote a letter to her father in America telling him her sad condition in the desert village. Her father replied her a letter with a short story. The story was that in one place there was one prison with two prisoners inside. One prisoner looked at stars from window and another looked down at mud. They killed their time in this way every day. Then no further words any more in the letter.
She could not understand the meaning, but after a time, she realized what her father meant. She immediately started to mix with the villagers learning their culture and language. When she was back in American again, she wrote a book about her experience in desert. This book was very popular after it was published.
